Chapter 14

“I guess you’re off the hook,” I say to Luther. “I’ll call my mama now that we have that idiot.”

“Just one thing puzzles me,” Luis says.

“What’s that?” I ask.

“How are you going to get him to Texas?” he says, eyeing Pinky.

“One thing at a time,” I say and bite my lip in thought. “First I’m going to call Mama and tell her the good news. Then we’ll figure out how to get the family idiot to Mesa View where his mama and daddy can deal with him.”

We have Pinky lying on the floor still wrapped in the net and a towel. “This is kidnapping, you know?” he says. “I could have you arrested.”

“I could tell everyone about Old Mister Whitaker” I say.

The room becomes silent and Pinky stops struggling against the net. In a small voice he says, “You wouldn’t. You pinky promised you’d never mention that.”

“I’m desperate,” I say.

Luis and Luther both look at me with raised eyebrows. Finally Luis says, “Well? Aren’t you going to fill us in?”

“Only if Pinky fails to promise that he won’t have us arrested for kidnapping,” I say and nudge Pinky with my toe. “I’m waiting,” I say and kick him a little harder.

“I promise,” he reluctantly says.

“Is that a Pinky promise?” I ask.

“Yes,” he mutters.

“I can’t hear you,” I say.

“Yes!” he angrily shouts.

“That’s better,” I say and smile.

“You’re ruthless,” Luther says and laughs.

“You ain’t seen nothing yet, big guy,” I say. “Let me remind you that I have more than one pair of cuffs.”

Pinky stirs and says, “Can I sit up?”

“Only if you’re a good boy,” I say.

Luther is still wet from his dip in the pool. He empties his pockets on the nightstand and a wallet accidentally drops on the floor and opens.

“I’m going to take a shower and change,” he says. “I think you two have the situation under control.”

“We do,” Luis says. He helps Pinky to a sitting position and Pinky squirms around and leans against the bed.

“Comfortable now?” I ask.

He smiles up at me and says, “I’m doing much better now, thank you.”

“Good,” I say, “because I’m calling my mama and telling her you’re in our motel room and you’re going to be a good boy and then I’m going to put you on the phone and let you promise her you’ll go back to Mesa View and behave yourself.”

“Do I have to?” Pinky whines.

“Yes, you have to,” I say sternly.

I dial Mama and say, “Mama, I have some very good news for you.”

“I certainly hope so,” Mama says.

“I have someone here who wants to talk to you and he’s going to promise that he’s going to come back to Mesa View... real soon. Here he is, Mama” I say and hold the phone to Pinky’s ear.

“Auntie Anne...” he says, timidly.

There’s a stream of noises coming from the phone and Pinky is just sitting on the floor staring off into space, his jaw hanging open. When the noises from the phone finally stop he looks at me in awe and says, “I never heard Auntie Anne talk like that before.
